Dear Friends,

We regret to inform you that after some long discussions with Tim Boxall (which has been a very difficult proceedure, as he has proved to be very unreasonable and inconsiderate towards everyone, using mannerisms and provocative language that have been sabotaging the work which brings us together and close to the local community). Tim Boxall is the chair of VGCC management commitee.

New Generation has definitely been kicked out of VGCC.

VGCC has changed the locks on Friday 27th November, without informing anybody, even though the time he has given to us is until Sunday 29th November (As publically stated in a notice posted on the front entrance to VGCC by Mr. Boxall) and New Generation particpants and coordinators have been denied access to their equipment.

We are very upset with the attitude and lack of interest we have been shown by all the local authorities that we have contacted, such as Catherine Miller-Bassi (Head of Lambeth Arts), Dawn Bunce (Arts Development Officer), Lambeth Voluntary Action, The Law Society, South London Press, Chris Norris whom we approached and whose answer was ‘ Tim sits opposite me in the same department and I can’t do anything about it’, Boris Johnson (Mayor of London), different Lambeth counsellors who never returned our calls and many more we will be named next week.

This goes to show that we have been regarded with contempt and at no point has our contribution and service to the local and wider London community been acknowledged, due to his strong connections with certain key people who are suppose to be helping groups like ours. As a reminder: Nueva Generacion has been running FREE WORKSHOPS for the community in VGCC for the past 4 years and in London for the past 12 years.

Quick update: We arrived last night for the Samba workshop and were confronted with the change of locks and could not get in, We waited in the cold from 5:30 to 8:30 for them to get in contact with us or to arrive to open the doors for the workshop to take place but we did not get a reponse. Today Saturday we arrived at 10am with the young people from the area and Mr. Boxall was there and refused to explain to the young people why they could not have their workshop and why they could not take their bikes. He left saying the centre was closed which the young people could not understand, and went home from the centre and left to go home to call the police who arrived with sirens blaring to find friendly youths with NG members (who by the way are all CRB checked) ready to start their bicycle workshop. The police asked Mr. Boxall to come to the centre to answer to us. He came and again was evasive and using avoidance tactics with us and refused to let us in and also refused to tell us when we could have access to the premises to our property. We have recorded everything and will send that to you presently. Thanks to Ingrid (Fotosynthesis), Latin Youth Forum, Conejo, Ed, Jimmy, Clare, Collin we were able to save the day and join them at the Old Lillyan Baylis to do T. Shirt printing, photographic workshop, team building games and eat together.

We have made arrangements for our next plan of action to be on Wednesday the 2nd December 2009 from 7am till 9pm. We will be removing all our things from the back hall and we need all the people power we can get: “Every single member of NG, Participants and anyone with good vibes”. We will be taking some items to the Old Lilyan Baylis School, possibly to Latin American Multicultural Youth and the rest of the things we will be putting outside the centre, well covered and guarded as a sign of protest until we find the right space.

We want to play instruments and let all the neighbourhood know of the injustice they have committed against us and we need your support. If you can’t come on Wednesday then please send us a quick message about how you feel and what NG has done for you.

Please if anyone knows of any free space available straight away contact Paula by phone on 07916747353 or by email on paulamendez_72@hotmail.com

Love to all and we see you on Wednesday.

Please send this message to your friends.

NG is going to take part for the 2nd time in the Thames Festival Parade.

Launched in 1997, The Mayor’s Thames Festival has grown to become London’s largest free open-air arts festival, and is now in its twelfth year.

Every year key London roads are closed to traffic for the Thames Festival’s spectacular finale event, the Night Procession, with over 2,000 musicians, dancers, performers and masqueraders come from across the country and the world with lanterns, illuminated costumes and fantastic structures. The Procession takes place on Sunday 13th September 2009, starting at 7.15pm on Victoria Embankment, travels east crossing the Thames at Blackfriars Bridge, and finishes behind the Royal National Theatre and Southbank Centre.

More information on the Night Carnival procession here

This year will be New Generations 2nd year and promises to be another spectacular one aswell.

Our theme this year is “La Madre Monte Y El Mohan”

Charactors of Colombian Myths

The Mohan (or Muan) is one of the best known legends in Colombia. The name stems from that which the Spaniards used to give to the tribal priests, especially those in Cundinamarca and Boyaca (2 “states” within Colombia, they are called departments not states though). Later the peasants called the creature that guards the river by the same name.

He is considered the deification of the priests, who were persecuted in the times of the colonization. They fled to the mountains, caves and secret places where the tribes worshipped their gods. There the priests were transformed into these creatures.

It is told that the Mohan is a cannibal. He likes to eat children, especially infants. First he sucks the milk out of them then he roasts them over a fire of dead leaves. Likewise he loves beautiful young women, particularly recently engaged ones. He chases them and takes them to the river where he guards his treasure, he has large quantities of gold rings, nose rings, precious stones and other jewels.

Additionally people affirm that the Mohan is mischievous, and commonly steals bait off of fisherman’s hooks, or the hook itself. Also attributed to him are the swellings of the rivers and flooding. He likes to drown people, usually those who swim by themselves in solitary lagoons. This is why he is considered a form of water guardian.

Tobacco and salt are two of his weaknesses, and can be used to defend yourself against him. Those who have seen him often say that he is smoking, and he stays far away from salt.

Physically this character is described two ways, some say he is a giant, covered with hair, red eyes, and burnt skin. His teeth are yellow.

Others describe him as an old mossy tribesman, also very furry, but like a dwarf, black haired and dark skinned.

On a personal note my mother and her brother swear that when they were children they walked down to a river to draw water and saw a little furry man, smoking, who beckoned to them. They turned to leave, and when they turned back he was gone in a matter of seconds. My grandmother told them to carry salt in their pockets after that. If you throw salt on him, he transforms into a small gold idol.

Come Join us and have a fantastic time and amazing fun

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQOaiHEML5Y

This video is a mixture of the different weks of the dance class on Mondays and Tuesdays evenings 7-9pm at Vauxhall Gardens community centre.Sinc Everaldo came to teach us Afro-brazilian dance and rhythms, we all became addicted to his dynamic and motivating energy. The class is bigger every week and we have pulled together a choregraphy in 4 weeks of intense work and dedication. His diversity and creativity is unique and give you the strenght and desire to explore personal boundaries and discover hidden dancing abilities.

From Afro-brazilian dance to contemporary, jazz, hip hop, classical, this class is suitable for beginners to more advanced as Evereado is rally talented in working with diferent level and adapting the class without leaving anyone behind………..at the contrary, your self-esteem and confidence will raise so much that you will feel alive and relaxed, allowing the body to breath and move freely.

Classes are free but donations are welcome as we all work on a voluntary basis but support is needed to pay for the transport or refreshements or even to support the performances.

Thank you so much Everaldo an all the participants for this beautiful class, every week we are longing for the next class to come.
